Elliott Smith wakes up in the hospital with a head injury - and an invisible companion. At first, he's convinced "John" is just a figment of a damaged brain, but when he's fully recovered John is still around and desperate to find out who he is. Reluctantly, Elliott agrees to help, and discovers Chicago PD has a John Doe on their hands with six bullets in him - who died in the ER at the same time Elliott was there.
As Elliott digs deeper into the mystery of John, he stumbles on a body hidden behind a wall for 80 years, meets a sexy artist who could become more than just a one-night stand, and uncovers a deadly secret that has haunted a nun for two decades.
His Name Is John Elliott Smith Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Dorien Grey Jim Hickey F Roger Margason Books
I loved this book and here is why! I liked the way the story unfolded. It did not move the story in a rushed speed. I loved the gay characters in the book, they were not stereotypical feminine or hyper-masculine. We were not privy to their sexual fun time, we did not get to hear about their rippling muscles, their endowment, or sexual feats (that is not a bad thing but I know where to find books like that if I want them, and have them. This book is fresh and different and does not come across as pretentious boring. Elliot was an everyday guy. I like him.I like the way the author describes things. He fleshes out the story in a very interesting manner and does not answer every single question right away. I found his descriptions very interesting they drew me in. I really like this author and am definitely going to get the rest in this series. His style is different, but that is the thing that I found so very refreshing about him. He paints well with words.

His Name Is John Elliott Smith Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Dorien Grey Jim Hickey F Roger Margason Books Reviews
I love gay sleuths and have followed Hardesty mystery series for years and Dorien Grey has never failed to deliver a great mystery story. But His Name is John is Dorien's best to date. I finished it in the same day as I was simply caught up by Elliot's intriguing situation from the start (what an amazing beginning) and could not put it down until the last sentence. The plot is highly original, well crafted and layered with suspense and intrigues and the underlying sad tone throughout lend a sense of credibility to the story itself. As for the characters what can I say. I love Elliot Smith's character. Disciplined, dependable, rich and smart, it is almost impossible to get this seemingly ordinary guy to lose his cool. And Elliot does have all his work cut out for him as he ponders about his own sanity as one lingering and persistent spirit refuses to leave him until Elliot helps him out. The supporting characters of Elliot's caring sister, brother-in-law and Elliot's new found artist lover are well developed too. As for the ghost John, he is as much the spirit of the story itself and I find myself liking this tragic character as much as Elliot.
I really have a great time reading this one as each time a layer is peeled away more intrigues and surprises await. As printed on the cover, this is an Elliot Smith mystery which means there is more to come. I hope Dorien Grey delivers soon as I wish to know how it pans out for our hero, his ghost and his artist lover as much as their next mystery. Read this!
Finally finished a book by Dorien Grey and it was very, very, good. I am really starting to love these mysteries with ghosts in them. I think it's probably because l wish they were real. Anyway the book was long, and l enjoyed the mystery very much. I was able to figure out who John was before it was revealed but it took nothing away from the story. The voice of the audio narrator sounded like that of someone older which had me constantly reminding myself the age of the characters and the year of the story but l switched between the eBook and audio so it didn't matter. Anyway 5 starts for me and highly recommended. Onto book two or maybe l will move onto Dick Hardesty book 1. Can't decide.
First let me say that this story, if you read it, is wonderful and well worth reading. Now my problem is the audible narration. The narrator is horrible. Not only can he not properly pace the story, but he reads it like every sentence ends with an exclamation point. The other problem is that his voice. He sounds like a 90 year old two pack a day smoker with Parkinson's. Just horrible. I tried twice to listen to this book but it was no use, I couldn't get past the second chapter. I will read it only and return the audio version. What a shame.
I had rather mixed feelings about this book and hate to be the lone reviewer to give it less than 5 stars!
The writing style took some getting used to as it regularly includes a lot of descriptions of everyday actions (changing, doing dishes, showering, reading the newspaper, etc.) It's a style one doesn't see that often and it took me a while to not focus on every one of these details just cause it is included does NOT mean there is a plot reason for that action being in the book.
The plot was fairly easy to guess. I won't include spoilers but I guessed the answer to the mystery within very very short order. That said, it didn't matter because the really interesting part of the story was the development of John as he grew in his alternate reality. That was really well done.
As for the "romance" part of the story it felt realistic enough but there was no emotion transmitted to the reader at all. So, ultimately, I didn't care much if our hero ended up with Steve (who is very nice but a bit one dimensional) or not.
In all this was an interesting story not so much for the mystery but for the "ghost" angle. I am not sure yet whether I will search out other works by this author.
